This year CES turned out to
be a bit different from the previous years. This year we saw the flood of
wearables being introduced by nearly half a dozen companies. And when everyone
is doing it, how can Intel stay away from it? So like everyone else, Intel brought their big guns
with them to the CES 2015 and sure enough they did not disappoint. After giving
us quite an insight on their latest venture i.e. wearables, Intel introduced to
the world, the Edison.
Edison is a miniature computer chip that is build using the 22nm technology. It is a dual core PC with build in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities and the most interesting part of it is that this PC is the size of a micro SD card!
Yes that’s right, it is one of the smallest chips that you might have seen that can run like a traditional PC and for now it runs on Linux. Currently it is only offered to developers and hopefully it will be seen getting mass produced some time later in 2015.
Intel also gave a very interesting demo of how the chip can be used in our regular lives by showing a short clip where the chip is embedded in a child's toy and the milk warmer, and when the child starts crying, the chip detects it and sends signals to the parent’s phones and even the milk warmer starts automatically so that the child can have warm milk if hungry. Now that is really cool. Not the 2015 we imagined in the movie Back to the Future with flying hover boards but we are getting close to its.
Now what’s left for us to see is if developers find it interesting enough and worth their time to create some amazing things using the chip and who knows, maybe we might start seeing flying hover boards too by 2016.
